In a closed adoption, adoptive parents get no contact or personal information about the adopted child’s family. This practice is not as common today in domestic adoptions, although international adoptions are often still closed.
Semi-open adoptions often have a third party that relays information between the birth and adoptive families for a period of time. Medical information, pictures or letters might be shared, though time frames and lengths of time may differ depending on each family. Most domestic adoptions are semi-open adoptions.
While we’re pretty much open to any child that we can adopt, I’m pretty sure we’ll end up with a closed or very semi-open adoption. Thinking about the varying levels of openness, I wonder how open is too open and how might that affect the child we adopt? I understand why some folks would want an open adoption but am thinking that it isn’t an option for our family…but who knows…
